...but not Salt Lake City. Boo! Miss Americana is a documentary about Taylor Swift’s meteoric rise to fame and how she dealt with her own personal struggles and demons through it all - body image and an eating disorder, haters, sexual assault, paparazzi, loneliness, cats, and Kanye West.
This documentary probably isn’t going to change anybody’s heart or mind about Taylor Swift as an artist. She’s clearly one of the most talented singer/songwriters working in the industry today. But she’s clearly the new “Queen of Nice”
What is interesting in this doc is how well Swift illustrates that, even though she is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, she’s still treated differently and discriminated against because of her gender. She has to constantly reinvent herself with each album and each concert tour. She’s constantly scrutinized for her looks (admitting to having an eating disorder that she has to keep at bay), and has felt she has had to keep her mouth shut about politics and current events in order to keep from offending her fans and being vilified by those who hate her.
In the last year, much of this has changed. Swift started speaking out about her political views, has fought back against a radio DJ who groped her, and is much more conscious about eating and not looking at pictures of herself. She wants to be able to wear pink and talk politics. She doesn’t to be perceived as bossy, she just wants to be the boss. But a nice one.
